The Language Barrier

A problem that has been presented in our studies raises many questions. We will be presented with the task of caring for people who speak different languages. Communication may be difficult if not impossible at times. How can we learn enough of every language, of every culture, to be able to give proper care to each and every individual? The odds seem to stack up against us. Canada is a multicultural nation, and the nation survives. Out health care system must continue to grow and accommodate the changes in our people and our ways. Perhaps, we need to look at this challenge as a gift rather than a burden. What an opportunity we have to learn and grow in more ways than we can even begin to understand.

The Fears Of a Nursing Student

As a nursing student I am very excited about my journey through school. However, I have fears that are as equally great as my excitement. My fear is a rather obvious thought that more than likely crosses many students’ minds. What if I get part way through all of this hard work and cannot make the grade? All of that money and time spent for naught; my dreams and aspirations gone. How will I ever earn enough in order to send my children to school? My career as a nurse is to give my life meaning but also to assist my children in earning their own careers. It can be a very frightening concept to consider.

The Long Distance Digital Assessment

Ontario Tele-medicine Network has made another leap in technology. It is now feasible for critical care patients to receive their follow up assessments in their neighborhood hospitals linked with their specialist, who is often located many miles away. Through digital technology a client’s assessment can be sent instantly to a specialist using advance video and internet technology. A specialist can use this new technology as if the client were in the same examination room with them. It relieves the client of the stress and expense of traveling, often for many hours, and enables the client to be in a familiar environment that will hopefully expedite their healing. This is very exciting, as it makes health care more accessible than ever, even in critical care situations.

Technology helping or hindering...

New technology is helping to overcome some of the communication barriers that exist in health care today. The recent addition of computers replacing film in diagnostic areas has doubled the number of files being read in one day. There is no longer any wait time between the time the X-ray, MRI, or CT scan are taken. The physician is able to call up the results quickly and directly to any computer screen, regardless of his/her location. This not only allows the radiologist to read double the number of diagnostic images, but also speeds up the treatment to patients.

Hi, my name is Karen.
I have three awesome teenage children, a couple of dogs, a few lizards, a couple of birds, and no I am not creating a personal zoo. I just love animals, and get a great deal of enjoyment from them. On a more personal note, I am currently a first year Nursing Student. I am finally able to follow my dreams. The four year collaborative nursing program is certainly very challenging, but I have to admit that I am really enjoying it so far! It is my personal journey into a new world that has always fascinated me.
